Every year employees look forward to the company holiday party, but for many the time has come when businesses no longer allow parties of any kind. They do not want to offend anyone, they do not have the money or they do not want to invest the money in a company party.

Try to choose the best date for all employees to attend. Do not schedule against sports events or important family holidays. This will help you to decide if the party will be off site or on site. If it is going to be off site you will need to get permission from the company regarding location, funds and other guest. At an off site party you cannot exclude spouses and companions.

If the party is going to be on site, during normal work hours, it saves money for the company and the location is easy for everyone. You do not have to include spouses or children, but you can give permission for them to attend and join in. This is the best idea for a company that has employees with schedules that over lap. If you are going to chose a theme and decorate, you need to be careful. Companies are now prevented from offending anyone who may have different beliefs. Make the theme general, such as an employee party for everyone in the company. Keep colors and decoration to a winter or summer theme. Use up beat music, but not seasonal, unless agreed to be all employees.

Food is the number one entertainment! Let employees bring in pot luck dishes, but the employer should provide the main course, dishes and eating ware, all drinks of non alcoholic beverages and desert snacks. Be sure to provide plenty of food for everyone with lots of main dishes, non sugar foods, sweets and chocolates.

Do not exchange gifts. This is a way to offend certain employees that do not share the same beliefs. A great way to say thank you is for the employer to provide general gift cards to everyone for at least $50.00. This money will go a long way in paying bills, buying the family gifts or extending the food budget. If possible, increase the amount of the gift card.

A simple drawing for gifts with everyone’s name entered, is fun for everyone and it is not considered a holiday gift. Provide small items like dishes, gift cards for dinners out with the family, company logo items, ice chest, kitchen ware, decoration items and even hand made gifts donated by other employees.

Your party planning will be a success and everyone will leave happy. It is the best way to say thank you for all the hard work throughout the rest of the year.

Proper Procedure for Calling in Sick

Its 7 A.M. the alarm goes off and you realize you feel horrible! You are supposed to be at work for 9 A.M., what happens next?

First you must decide if you are going to call in sick. If you answer yes to any of the following, call in sick. Your employer and fellow coworkers will appreciate your choice:

  • If you are sick enough to see a doctor
  • If you are contagious
  • If your illness causes you to be unproductive

Policies vary from business to business. You should always follow procedures set forth by your employer’s business/departments; however, there are steps that should be followed out of professional courtesy no matter where you work.

  • The employee should make the call, not a family member or friend.
  • If you are expected to be at your desk at 9 A.M don’t wait until 9:01 A.M. to call!
  • Make it a point to contact your supervisor. If this is not possible then leave a message with his/her administrative assistant.

If you are unable to reach your supervisor or their assistant then leave a message with the receptionist. If another contact is being used for calling in sick the receptionist will know and pass this information on to you for next time.  After you have explained to your supervisor why you are calling in sick, remind him/ her of any daily responsibilities that you take care of that will have to be done by a co-worker. You may want to suggest someone at this point if it will only be for the day.

Many businesses require an employee to have a doctor’s note to return to work and to verify sick time. If you have gone to the doctor and are aware that you will be out for more than a day you should call your supervisor again so that arrangements for a temp can be made if necessary.

To make your life easier during these stressful moments you should keep the following information near your telephone:

  • Your supervisor’s name and contact numbers
  • Who would you speak to in the event your supervisor is out
  • A list of your daily office tasks that must be completed during a regular business day
  • The name of any co-worker who is aware of your job duties
